Medicare 2018: Stand-Alone Drug Plans (PDPs)
Medicare Part D is Medicare's prescription drug coverage. Oftentimes it is bundled with a Medicare Advantage plan. If you are enrolled in Original Medicare or have a Medicare Supplement, you will need to add Part D coverage. There is a penalty associated with delaying enrollment in Part D if you do not have existing Part D or comparable (private, group, or employer) coverage.
There are many strategies that can be employed to lower the total cost of your prescription drugs, especially if you are taking multiple medications. Some plans offer much lower co-pays for drugs in exchange for slightly higher premiums. It may also be worth looking to see if you are eligible for Extra Help or the LIS program, where part or all of your Part D premiums may be covered (more information here)
Medicare.gov offers a wonderful tool that allows you to search Part D plans in your area and enter your prescription medications to find the most cost effective plan. That link may be found below. As always, if you need advice on which plan is best for your personal situation or questions about your Medicare coverage and Part D in general, it is always wise to speak with an independent agent.
